This Week In Rock History

THIS WEEK IN ROCK HISTORY

1959—Borrowing $800 from friends and family a 29-year-old Barry Gordy opens his first record company, Tamla Records. The following year Gordy would change the name of the studio to reflect it's home base of Detroit, the Motor City, rechristening it Motown.

1961—Motown signs The Primettes to a recording contract and gets them to agree to change their name. After debating a series of possible new names, the band finally settles on The Supremes.

1966—In an effort to avoid confusion with The Monkees' Davy Jones, singer David Jones decides to change his name. He renames himself after the "big American bear killin' knife" the Bowie knife, changing his name to David Bowie.

1967—The Rolling Stones agree to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show changing the words of the song "Let's Spend The Night Together" to "Let's Spend Some Time Together"

1968—The Supremes appear on the NBC television series Tarzan playing a group of singing nuns.

1970—Diana Ross appears for the last time with The Supremes at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. The Supremes would go on to have seven more top forty hits with Ross' replacement Jean Terrell.

1979—The Young Men's Christian Association file a lawsuit against The Village People over their hit song "Y.M.C.A." The suit would later be dropped.

1982—Harry Casey (KC of KC and The Sunshine Band) is partially paralyzed in a car accident in Hialeah, Florida. His full physical recovery would take years.

Rock History

1958--Johnny Cash performs before a captive audience at San Quentin Prison in California.
Among the inmates that day was 21-year-old Merle Haggard who was serving two years for a burglary conviction.

1962--The Beatles audition for Decca Records, recording 15 tracks for executives who decided to pass in favor of signing Brian Poole & the Tremeloes. An executive tells Beatles manager Brian Epstein that "These boys won't make it. Guitar groups are out. Go back to Liverpool, Mr. Epstein." Decca would later regret their decision, despite the fact that The Tremeloes are still together and playing. The Beatles, on the other hand, are not.

1969--An entire shipment, 30,000 copies, of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's experimental album Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins is seized by New Jersey authorities who deem the cover, which features a picture of Lennon and Ono standing nude against a white background, to be pornographic. From this point on, the album can only be sold in a plain brown wrapper with a cut-out showing the artists faces.

1970--The Who's drummer Keith Moon is involved in an accident when his limo is swarmed by anxious fans. Moon's driver, Neil Boland, gets out of the car to try and protect it from damage, however he fails to put the car into park. When the car begins to roll, Moon, who doesn't have driver's license, jumps into the front seat in an attempt to stop the car. However, instead of hitting the breaks Moon hit the gas pedal, running over and killing Boland. An inquest resolves that Moon is not to blame for the accident, however Moon himself is unable to forgive himself, and lives with guilt for the rest of his short life.

1979--Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious stands his trial for the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. The trial would never be finished, Vicious would die of a heroin overdose less than a month later; on her deathbed Vicious' mother is claimed to have admitted to giving her son the fatal dose, fearing that he would not be able to handle being in prison.

1996--OJ Simpson calls an LA radio station to request a dedication of "One Sweet Day" from Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey to his murdered wife Nicole Brown Simpson.

Rock News

--R&B singer Cee Lo Green has sparked outrage among John Lennon fans after changing the lyrics to Lennon's 1971 hit Imagine during a live television performance. Green, who was performing as part of the NBC's New Year's Eve countdown, changed the line "Nothing to kill or die for/and no religion too" to "Nothing to kill or die for/and all religion's true." Lennon fans responded almost immediately, bombarding Green's Twitter page with accusations that "[Cee Lo] sang "Imagine" in a fur coat & expensive jewelry and changed lyric to be pro-religion." and "[he]changed the entire message of the song." Green responded to the controversy by Tweeting "Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys ... I was trying to say a world where u could believe what u wanted, that's all." However only minutes later Green deleted the Tweet, as well as all others relating to the performance, and replaced them with simply "Happy New Year Everyone!"

--Legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin has announced her engagement to long time William "Willie" Wilkerson on Monday in a statement. The 69 year-old singer, who has been married twice previously, joked in her press released that "No, I'm not pregnant." Franklin said she and Wilkerson were planning on a spring wedding.

--Indy folk band Bon Iver will be appearing in a fitness DVD to be released in 2012. The band's frontman, Justin Vernon met personal trainer Jeff Rogers while playing a game of basketball at Wisconsin YMCA. Rogers noticed that Vernon was having problems with his back, and offered to help. The whole band eventually began to train with Rogers, and took his workouts with them on the road; now the band will appear as part of Rogers' workout DVD "On The Road," which will also feature at least one of the band's songs. Vernon is featured on Rogers' website saying Rogers helped him "understand his body"

--A former worker for an unnamed London hotel has claimed that pop star Lady Gaga recently left behind a "bathtub full of blood" that she believes the singer used for "bathing in blood as part of a Satanic ritual." The worker claims to have found "large amounts of blood in the suite during a stay this summer," also stating "The incident was reported to the concierge, who told [her] to put it out of her mind." No one from Lady Gaga's camp have responded to the claims.

--Sinead O'Connor has called off her divorce from her husband of three weeks Barry Herridge. Last week O'Connor announced that she was ending her marriage of 18 days due to conflicts with her new husband's family, however the couple have had a change of heart, deciding to seek marriage counseling instead. “We [have] decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend again and stay married, but we did rush [into marriage]." O'Connor also said she and Herridge hope to move in together “in like a year, like regular people.”
