Record Store Day

*4th annual National Record Store Day
The 4th annual National Record Store Day is Saturday April the 16th, 2011. Each year on Record Store Day, hundreds of independent record stores across the country celebrate the culture and unique place that they occupy in their local communities.
*Record Store Day Celebration at Bozeman’s “Cactus Records”
Locally-owned Cactus Records will be buzzing all day with the sale of exclusive limited edition CD & Vinyl releases created just for Record Store Day, free giveaways of music memorabilia & other shwag, door prizes, and free all-ages in-store live performances by local and nationally-known musicians.
*Cactus’ RSD Live In-store Performances
This year’s line-up of performers at Cactus will begin at 12 noon with new acts starting at the top of every hour.

  Cactus Records music line up:

*Exclusive Record Store Day Product
Exclusive Record Store Day product this year includes releases from artists such as The 13th Floor Elevators, AC/DC, Adele, Architecture in Helsinki, Bad Brains, Syd Barrett, Beady Eye, Bibio/Clark, Black Angels, Blitzen Trapper, Built to Spill, Budriver, Caribou, The Cars, Civil Wars, Eric Clapton, Dennis Coffee, Matt Costa, Country Joe & the Fish, Death Cab for Cutie, Decemberists, Deerhoof, Deftones, Dengue Fever, Derek & the Dominos, Dio, John Doe, The Doors, Duran Duran, Bob Dylan, Justin Townes Earle, Steve Earle, John Fahey, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Fleetwood Mac, Flogging Molly, Flying Lotus, Foo Fighters, Mike Gordon, Gorillaz, Grateful Dead, Green Day/Husker Du, Grinderman, Guided by Voices, John Hammond, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Eat World, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Joan of Arc, The Kills, Kings of Leon, Mastodon, Matt & Kim, John Mayall & Eric Clapton, Midlake, Mumford & Sons, My Morning Jacket, Nickel Creek, Nirvana, Of Montreal, Roy Orbison, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Phish, Pink Floyd, Queen, R.E.M. Rancid, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Rolling Stones, Rush, Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Paul Simon, Sonic Youth, Regina Spektor, Bruce Springsteen, Superchunk, Peter Tosh, Velvet Underground, White Stripes, Hank Williams III, & the Yarbirds – just to name a few.
Most of these are pressed in very limited quantities, with participating stores (and thus their customers) unable to get everything on their lists. The limited nature of these items increases the demand to fans and collectors looking for something unique by their favorite artists, often resulting in customers forming lines outside of their local store hours before the doors open. Because of this, participating stores are required to sign a contract agreeing to not hold or hoard product, price-gauge, sell it online, or sell it before Record Store Day.
The majority of these releases are vinyl, some 7” singles, others the less common 10” pressing, and many 12” vinyl singles and full-length albums. These all have full-color jackets, and many are on colored vinyl – a holy grail for collectors.
To read information on and see cover art for some of this year's exclusive Record Store Day product, click here (being updated daily!): http://www.recordstoreday.com/Page/620
Sales, prizes, and giveaways are also a regular feature at Record Store Day, with grab-bags of promotional CDs, stickers, posters, and other shwag free to customers while supplies last.
Cactus will hold drawings for door prizes every hour, some of which are donated by musicians and record labels, and others donated by other small local businesses in the community, with the grand prize being an ION PT-01 digital turntable (record player).
*Why Buy at Indie Retail?
Record Store Day is a celebration of the culture of small independent record stores, their customers, and their communities. Large corporate chain music and box-stores are excluded.
Regular customers of independent record stores often find the chains to be stale and their inventories too homogenized, ignoring customers whose tastes tend to lie outside of the current pop charts. Independent stores offer more obscure artists, non-pop genres, collectibles and older catalog titles.
While many of these customers use the internet to explore and download music, they find something lacking in the purely digital format. Added pleasure is found in the look, feel, smell, and increased sound quality of CDs and vinyl, as well is in the simple act of the searching through inventory of a well-stocked record store, likening the experience to a quest or archaeological dig.
gThe idea of 'The journey is the destination' is put into action by browsing in an indie record store” notes professional comedian, actor, and music fan Patton Oswalt.
Record Stores provide a social outlet where fans can intermingle with like-minded individuals and learn about releases from the knowledgeable staff.
Click here http://www.recordstoreday.com/Quotes?type=Artist to read more praise about indie record stores
More information about Record Store Day, its history, and its mission statement, can be found at www.recordstoreday.com.

Rock News

--Former KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent (The Ankh Warrior), was arrested at his home in Tennessee on Saturday and charged with aggravated assault charges after his wife walked into a police station covered in blood, claiming Vincent had punched her, thrown her down and dragged her through broken glass. A search of Vincent's home also found the bodies of four dogs kept in sealed containers in the basement. Vincent was a member of KISS from 1982 to 1984, replacing original lead guitarist Ace Frehley. Vincent spent the night in jail before being released on $10,000 bail.

--HBO has announced that it is making a film based on record producer Phil Spector's murder trial, with Al Pacino set to play Spector. Also announced in the cast are Bette Midler, who will play Spector's defense attorney Linda Baden, and Jeffery Tambor who will play Spector's other attorney Bruce Cutler.

--A play based on the life of AC/DC singer Bonn Scott, titled “Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be” is set to open in Australia in July.  Scott fronted the iconic hard rock band from their inception until his tragic death at the age of 33 in 1980.

--Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger has announced the formation of a new group called Super Heavy. The super-group, which is already in the studio, features Jagger, former Eurythmics songwriter/producer Dave Stewart, singer Joss Stone, reggae artist Damien Marley and film composer A.R. Rahman. Jagger even hinted a possible Super Heavy tour, saying, “If people like it we will [tour], if they don't, we won't” The album is slated for release in September.

--Actress Gwyneth Paltrow's deal with Atlantic Records to record a country album, has fallen apart. Paltrow was rumored to be close to signing a deal with Atlantic, following her turn as country singer in the film Country Strong, but is now no longer in talks with the label. While no official reason has been given for Atlantic's reported “cooling” on the deal, a source at the record company says that Paltrow's asking price of $1-million was more than the company felt comfortable in offering an untried singer. A spokesperson for Paltrow noted that  “Atlantic was not the only company perusing her.”

--In better movie-star-becoming-country-singer news: Jeff Bridges, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a down-and-out country singer in the film Crazy Heart, is set to release his self-titled album in August. The album is produced by Crazy Heart soundtrack T-Bone Burnett and features guitarist Marc Ribot and backing vocals from Rosanne Cash.
