Most of these are pressed in very limited quantities, with participating stores (and thus their customers) unable to get everything on their lists. The limited nature of these items increases the demand to fans and collectors looking for something unique by their favorite artists, often resulting in customers forming lines outside of their local store hours before the doors open. Because of this, participating stores are required to sign a contract agreeing to not hold or hoard product, price-gauge, sell it online, or sell it before Record Store Day.

The majority of these releases are vinyl, some 7” singles, others the less common 10” pressing, and many 12” vinyl singles and full-length albums. These all have full-color jackets, and many are on colored vinyl – a holy grail for collectors. Cactus will hold drawings for door prizes every hour, some of which are donated by musicians and record labels, and others donated by other small local businesses in the community, with the grand prize being an ION PT-01 digital turntable (record player).

*Why Buy at Indie Retail?

Record Store Day is a celebration of the culture of small independent record stores, their customers, and their communities. Large corporate chain music and box-stores are excluded.
Regular customers of independent record stores often find the chains to be stale and their inventories too homogenized, ignoring customers whose tastes tend to lie outside of the current pop charts. Independent stores offer more obscure artists, non-pop genres, collectibles and older catalog titles.

While many of these customers use the internet to explore and download music, they find something lacking in the purely digital format. Added pleasure is found in the look, feel, smell, and increased sound quality of CDs and vinyl, as well is in the simple act of the searching through inventory of a well-stocked record store, likening the experience to a quest or archaeological dig.

The idea of 'The journey is the destination' is put into action by browsing in an indie record store” notes professional comedian, actor, and music fan Patton Oswalt.

Record Stores provide a social outlet where fans can intermingle with like-minded individuals and learn about releases from the knowledgeable staff.
